The ex-Real Madrid midfielder is reportedly being looked at to take over at a certain Premier League club.

Not for the first time, the figure of Xabi Alonso is attracting plenty of glances in the world of football. The Bayer Leverkusen manager has performed fantastically well ever since he took charge of the team, causing him to become a potential name for some of Europe’s biggest sides, and Spurs.

Now, Dutch outlet, Telegraaf, is reporting that the Basque is top of the list at Tottenham to take over full time next season. After a turbulent season, Conte left as the Spurs storm started to swirl, although now it seems that the entire club has been swept up in the mess, and they are one of a few clubs in the league that are ending the campaign in an objectively funny sense of turmoil (Chelsea, Leeds, we’re also looking at you).

Pochettino to Spurs?

Spurs interim manager, Cristian Stellini, was sacked after taking control when Conte left, but he has since been shown the door and the job has once again fallen in the lap of Ryan Mason, who knows the club. Stellini’s last act was going down 5-0 in 21 minutes; since then, Mason has overseen a 2-2 draw and a 4-3 defeat, ensuring that he has not left the madness at the side of the road like a biting puppy: however bad it gets, you’re not able to let go.

Pochettino’s name had rang around the Spurs stadium, but mainly from fans who wished to be transported back to 2019 where Lucas Moura was statue worthy and Harry Kane promised he was fit for the Champions League final. Nagelsmann was also an option, and surely a skateboard-riding hipster would fit in well around N17.

Alonso’s contract runs to 2024

But now it is Xabi Alonso, whose contract with Leverkusen runs until 2024, and whose plans are to see his deal run to its natural conclusion. But an offer from the Premier League could tempt him, although to a team that is bordering on the Champions League and doesn’t have their future assured in Europe’s top competition might leave a few bumps in the road of negotiations.

The manager, who has got Bayer into the Europa League semi-finals, is also attracting loving looks from his old hunting ground, Madrid, who still do not know what will happen with Ancelotti. Once again, it seems, everyone has their eyes on Xabi.
