With only three games in Major League Soccer, Riqui Puig has become the most determinant player for the Los Angeles Galaxy in their aspirations to qualify to the MLS Cup playoffs this season. The FC Barcelona product made his second start against Toronto FC at BMO Field on Wednesday night and he scored his first goal, a screamer, to tie the game 2-2 for the Galaxy.

Riqui Puig the man of the hour

The team with the most league titles (5) was trailing 2-1 with one minute left on the clock before stoppage time and Puig came to the rescue. The FC Barcelona product shot a rocket from outside the box and the ball curled to the far post past Toronto’s goalkeeper Alex Bono to score the equalizer in the 89th minute to give the Galaxy a much needed one point.

“I feel good, unfortunately we didn’t get the three points, but well, one point at an important field,” said Puig after the game. The 23-year-old played the entire match and once again was the engine of the Galaxy, asking constantly for the ball and helping make the transitions quicker and clean.

Riqui Puig is changing the style of play of the Los Angeles Galaxy and his impact has been felt immediately with the team trying to secure a spot in the 2022 MLS Cup playoffs. They earned four points in two road games and they will return back home to host Sporting Kansas City on September 4th. The team now sits in seventh place in the Western Conference with seven games left in the regular season.
