The date is set: Rodrygo will undergo surgery tomorrow to repair the anterior cruciate ligament and lateral meniscus tear in his right knee, an injury he suffered against Getafe. After returning to play following a break, the joint gave way during an awkward movement while sprinting in the 66th minute.

Tense hours followed, culminating the next morning in a worse diagnosis than expected: a double tear. The diagnosis arrived on March 3, and a week later, as AS has learned, the surgery will take place. This marks the true beginning of the 10 to 12 months that the Brazilian will spend on the sidelines. Tomorrow is the starting point.

These have been days of waiting, focused on preparing the right knee. That is the protocol. Haste is the worst enemy in these situations. But Real Madrid’s medical staff now believe the time has come. And, as is customary at the Bernabéu, Dr Manuel Leyes will perform the surgery. A leading figure both nationally and across Europe, he has operated on Militão, Courtois and previously Asensio and Joan Martínez. The only exception was Alaba, who entrusted his procedure to Christian Fink, Bayern Munich’s trusted surgeon. Unfortunately for Real Madrid, it is an ever growing list. Rodrygo is now part of it.

These days between the injury and the operation are crucial for recovery. It is an initial phase focused on reducing inflammation and joint effusion while maximising mobility. Rodrygo has been going through this process at Valdebebas with the club’s physiotherapists, who will continue to support him once Dr Manuel Leyes has carried out the procedure.

The club will stand by him. That is the message they have already delivered. They are counting on him and will honour the contract that ties him to the club until 2028. The injury does not alter plans that were never under discussion. The knee injury will rule him out for the remainder of the season and the World Cup, his greatest dream, but it will not separate him from Real Madrid. “Your future is here,” was the internal message sent to Rodrygo during those hours of confirmation and reflection.

His eyes are already fixed on the start of 2027, when the roadmap for his comeback begins to enter its final chapter. Even amid the bitterness of the moment, Rodrygo is already looking ahead. From “one of the worst moments of my life” to “this is a see you soon.” For now, the operation will be tomorrow.
