Diego Lainez and Santiago Giménez lead the list of players not selected by Gerardo Martino. In addition, the Mexican National Team’s coach did not include Jesús Angulo from Tigres and Erick Sánchez from Pachuca going to the World Cup in Qatar. The final list has been widely criticized by the media and fans.

Moreover, the Argentinian coach included Roberto Alvarado, Orbelin Pineda, Rogelio Funes Mori, and Raul Jiménez, this last one causing uproar among many due to his injury and having not received the okay to play.

No Europa League star for Mexico

The omission of Santiago Giménez from the Qatar 2022 squad is one of the most contentious, given what he accomplished in his first months with Feyenoord in the local league and also in the Europa League, where he scored the game-winning goal that advanced them to the next round as group leaders.

Lainez has had less regularity with Sporting Braga, despite leaving Real Betis with that goal in mind. The winger has struggled to find himself with minutes on the first team, where he has not played enough to make an impact in the Portuguese division.

Not enough for Tata Martino and the Mexican squad

Jesús Angulo and Erick Sánchez were part of the group who left Mexico for Girona, hoping to impress the coach of the Mexican National Team. Still, in the end, their efforts were not sufficient in the race to secure a spot on the roster for Qatar 2022.

Tata Martino has been under fire due to a difficult road to the World Cup and his issues with players like Chicharito and Carlos Vela. Regardless of how well El Tri does in the World Cup, the Argentinian coach will leave the team at the end of the tournament.
