Santiago Giménez wants to lead the Mexican national team’s attack during the upcoming FIFA World Cup in November, but he is aware that he needs to adapt quickly at Feyenoord in order to make a case for himself. El Tri’s head coach, Gerardo Martino, has made it clear that Raúl Jiménez will lead the attack as long as he is in charge, but the Wolverhampton striker has yet to return to peak form since recovering from the skull fracture that he suffered back in November 2020.

The Mexican national team has struggled to find the back of the net over the past two years and Gerardo Martino has been in the hot seat lately. So he is looking for alternatives on offense and Santiago Giménez could be the solution to his problems. The former Cruz Azul striker is adapting quickly to the Eredivisie and in his third appearance with Feyenoord he scored a goal and provided an assist.

Strong performance from Giménez

The 21-year-old has yet to start an Eredivisie game but he has come in as a substitute in the last three fixtures. In the latest game against FC Emmen, Santiago Giménez came in the 63rd minute replacing Danilo when Feyenoord was up 1-0 and had an immediate impact in the match.

It didn’t take Giménez long to find the back of the net, racing onto a through ball in the 85th minute, he beat goalkeeper Eric Oelschlägel with a low shot off his left foot to make it 2-0. This gave a comfortable lead to Feyenoord with very little time left on the clock. But Santiago Giménez was not done just yet.

Three minutes later, the Mexican headed a free kick to assist Jacob Rasmussen, who scored the third goal of the game to secure an emphatic win for the home side. In stoppage time, Sebastian Szymański put icing on the cake, making it 4-0 and Feyenoord obtained their third win of the season.
