Sergio Busquets, another Barcelona legend in Miami
Catalan midfielder Sergio Busquets followed Messi to MLS after bidding farewell to Barcelona.
Busquets landed in the MLS in June. Jorge Mas's club had the fans excited with the announcement of his signing, particularly after the arrivals of other Barcelona legends, Messi and Jordi Alba.
At 35 years old, the Spanish defensive midfielder has a three-season contract, lasting until December 2025. Despite receiving a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, he felt the United States was a better option for him and his family.
Sporting Director Chris Henderson expressed his delight: “He is one of the most intelligent players out there. His reading of the game is unprecedented and impacts every facet of play. He’s a winner, a leader, and a world-class talent.”
Despite having won everything with Barcelona and the Spanish national team, his goal remains to compete and take the team to the next level. Indeed, they won the Leagues Cup just a month after his arrival.
In the league, they weren’t as fortunate, failing to qualify for the playoffs and change the situation. That means Busquets won’t play again until February.
In just a few months, he has shown ample evidence of his quality. He’s become a key player for ‘Tata’ Martino, accumulating 1,728 minutes in 20 matches, including the Leagues Cup and the U.S. Open Cup.
So much so, he has been nominated for the MLS MVP of 2023. Current Barcelona coach Xavi himself described him as “the best in the last 20 years and one of the best in history.” Luka Modric also said he is one of the best midfielders he has played against.
His impact among fans has been enormous. His jersey ranks among the top-selling in the league for 2023. It’s in thirteenth position, having been on sale for less time than most. Messi's jersey leads the list.
During his farewell from Barcelona, he expressed his intention to coach: “I want to be a coach, but first I need to test if I’m cut out for it. Yes, I am going to get my coaching license. I’m going to try.”
Interestingly, the profile picture of his Instagram account is the badge of Inter Miami. He’s not very active on social media, having posted only six photos since signing in the summer.
