Spain women’s national team remains high in the world rankings - who is the best women’s team in the world?
The Spanish National Team is still in 7th place in the FIFA ranking, but they want to climb even further.
A new FIFA ranking of women’s football is here. After the last update in December 2022, La Roja continue to maintain their strong position of 7th. Just four months before the start of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand (July 20 to August 20), the Spanish team continue to sit well within the top 10 teams in the world.
Spain’s team returned to action in February’s Nations Cup that was held in Australia. They beat Jamaica, lost to the hosts and picked up another win against the Czech Republic. Despite this slip, the team remain in 7th place. In the last set of FIFA rankings, released after Euro 2022, Spain dropped one place down from 6th, which is still their highest ever ranking.
No movement on the podium
All is quiet amongst the best in the world rankings: The United States continue to lead the table, ahead of Germany and Sweden. In fourth position sit the European Champions, England. Sarina Wiegman’s team is wihtout a doubt one of the favourites to win the World Cup. Their fantastic performance at the European Championship last summer was the clearest proof of their capacity to work as a well-oiled machine. They are followed by France, Canada and Spain in the list.
The top 10 is completed by the Netherlands, Brazil and Australia. The World Cup hosts sit last in the list but have managed to sneak into the top 10, in part thanks to their success in the Nations Cup, which they won ahead of Spain. On the contrary, the Republic of Korea have lost their 10th place position.
Who is the most improved team in the ranking?
Some of the most notable rises in this new ranking update are Portugal (21st, one up), Haiti (53rd, up two) and Panama (52nd, up five), having achieved their place in the playoffs for the World Cup.
In a few days a new international window for women’s football will reopen. Jorge Vilda’s team will play two friendlies against Norway and China in Ibiza. They are games that will be decisive for the next ranking update, on June 9. Arriving in Oceania in top form is, of course, the target.
