With 35 titles across all competitions (a record thirteen league titles, as well as a record six Copa México titles, and six Campeón de Campeones cups, along with ten FIFA recognized club trophies) Club América is the most successful club in the country and ‘Las Aguilas are one of the two most-supported clubs in Mexico (along with Chivas Guadalajara) and the only side in the nation never to have been relegated.

“I’m not afraid to say it, because it’s the reality. You can compare what Real Madrid is in Spain with what América is in Mexico,” said 37-year-old keeper Guillermo Ochoa back in the summer when doing his bit for the promotion for the summer pre-season friendly clash between the European champions and the Mexican giants.

Club Deportivo Guadalajara aka Chivas is the other major force in Mexican soccer with the team boasting a massive number of fans not only in Mexico but also in the United States. A unique feature of the club is the policy of using only Mexican players, a measure not dissimilar to that of Athletic Club in LaLiga with their ‘Basque only’ policy and this attribute resonantes with many Mexicans.

September Super Clasico double header

Both sides will face each other twice in the month of September with the first meeting set to take place in the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on 18 September as part of the 2022 Liga MX Apertura with both teams destined to participate in the post season liguilla.

The next meeting of the Mexican giants will come a week later but this contest will be staged in the United States. The 55,000 capacity Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta (home to Georgia Tech) will be packed as fans of both clubs in the US will be anxious to see their heroes at close call.

The game will be the fourth time that promoter Primetime Sports stages a Super Clasico in the US with Los Angeles, Dallas and Chicago previously hosting the matches.
