Cruz Azul took control in the first leg of the Liga MX semifinals against Club América, executing a near-perfect game plan under Vicente Sánchez. One of their key strategies? Shutting down Álvaro Fidalgo, the creative force behind América’s attack.

Throughout the 90-minute battle, Fidalgo was the most fouled player on the field, enduring five of the ten fouls committed by Cruz Azul. The relentless pressure disrupted América’s rhythm, forcing them to adjust their offensive approach.

Rivero goes in hard on Fidalgo

One of the most significant moments came when Ignacio Rivero delivered a crunching tackle on Fidalgo, leading to his expulsion after a VAR review. Despite the aggressive play, Fidalgo managed to continue the match and is expected to be in the starting lineup for the second leg.

Rivero had a dramatic night in the Liga MX semifinal first leg against Club América, scoring the game-winning goal before being sent off just minutes later.

Rivero’s harsh tackle on Álvaro Fidalgo led to a VAR review, ultimately resulting in his expulsion. The challenge targeted Fidalgo’s right ankle, raising concerns about a potential injury. However, after medical evaluation, Fidalgo was cleared to continue playing and, fortunately, does not have any lasting damage.

Cruz Azul‘s aggressive approach in the Liga MX semifinal first leg was evident in the way they targeted Álvaro Fidalgo, who endured more fouls than any other player on the field. According to Sofascore, Fidalgo topped the list of most-fouled players, surpassing Erick Lira, Carlos Rodríguez, and Víctor Dávila, who rounded out the Top 5.

Despite being the most fouled player in the Liga MX semifinal first leg, Álvaro Fidalgo remained a dominant force on the field. The 28-year-old midfielder showcased his technical brilliance, completing 87% of his passes, winning 10 out of 11 individual duels, and recovering possession nine times.

For the second leg of the Liga MX semifinals, Fidalgo is expected to be in Club América’s starting lineup, as head coach André Jardine looks to field his strongest XI in a must-win match.

When is the Liga MX semifinal return leg?
