Monterrey have a new achievement to boast about. The Rayados completed the regular phase of the Clausura 2023 streets ahead of the competition. Víctor Manuel Vucetich’s team dropped points in just four games during the entire campaign and finished on 40 points - a club record.

In doing so, the Regiomontanos joined a small club of teams that have reached and exceeded the 40-point mark in the history of short tournaments - a rare feat in the Mexican league.

Teams who have reached 40 points

The first team to record the landmark number of points since the new competition format was introduced as Cruz Azul, in the Invierno 1998 tournament. Led by coach Luis Fernando Tena, La Máquina finished top of the table, but were later eliminated by Pumas in the quarter finals.

Two years later, in the summer of 2000, Ojitos Meza’s Toluca not only registered 40 points, but were also crowned champions.

Before Monterrey, the last team to finish the regular season with 40 points was León - Ignacio Ambriz led La Fiera to the 2020 Apertura title.

Teams that exceeded 40 points

The club that holds the record for the most points is América. In the 2002 Apertura, Mario Carrillo made the Águilas the super leaders with 43 points, however, Ricardo Lavolpe’s Toluca, who finished just behind them on 41 points, ended up lifting the title after América bowed out in the quarter finals.

Other clubs who registered 41 points include: Pumas (Clausura 2004), León (Clausura 2019) and Cruz Azul (Clausura 2021).

The now defunct Jaguares de Chiapas can be proud of having been the team to register the most points in the Clausura 2004, with 42.
