Teen star Santiago Castrillón dies after mid-game collapse, teammates and Colombian soccer in shock

The 18-year-old Millonarios prospect collapsed during a youth match in Bogotá; tributes pour in from Radamel Falcao and others.

Update:

Colombian soccer is in shock after the sudden death of 18-year-old midfielder Santiago Castrillón, a rising talent in the Millonarios youth system.

Castrillón collapsed during a Bogotá derby in the national Under-20 tournament on Sunday. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical staff made every effort to save his life, but he later died.

Millonarios confirmed the news on social media with an emotional statement that reflected the scale of the loss.

“Today, soccer stops. Our blue heart is broken. We are overwhelmed with pain, helplessness, and sadness,” the club said. “We say goodbye to our No. 10, our teammate, our friend. Santiago didn’t just play soccer. He lived it, felt it, shared it with a smile that will stay with all of us forever.”

A rising No. 10 with first-team potential

Those who watched Castrillón play believed he embodied the modern playmaker. He combined dribbling ability, vision, and a knack for scoring goals, making him one of the brightest young prospects at Millonarios.

His performances at the Under-20 level regularly earned him opportunities to train with the senior squad, a sign of how highly he was regarded within the organization. Head coach Fabián Bustos had even confirmed publicly that the teenager was training with the first team throughout the week.

Castrillón’s progression had been steady and promising. Less than five months ago, he received his first senior call-up from Hernán Torres for a match against Atlético Bucaramanga. While he did not see game action, the experience marked a major milestone for the young midfielder, who was born in Bucaramanga.

“Intelligence, technique, dribbling,” Millonarios once said in describing his playing style.

From Bucaramanga to Bogotá, chasing a dream

Castrillón was born on September 7, 2007, and joined Millonarios’ youth academy in 2021 after impressing at Águilas Doradas. His journey in soccer began at a local club, Guayos FC.

At just 13 years old, he made the difficult decision to leave his hometown of Bucaramanga to pursue his dream in Bogotá, a move that would shape his future in the sport.

Tributes pour in across Colombian soccer

Messages of grief and support quickly spread across the Colombian soccer community following news of his passing.

Among the first to speak out was Radamel Falcao, now playing for Millonarios.

“Today we are filled with deep sadness,” Falcao said. “We have lost a teammate full of dreams, unmatched talent, and a bright future. We say goodbye with broken hearts, but also with a firm promise to keep fighting for everything he longed for.”

The Colombian Football Federation and Independiente Santa Fe also shared messages of condolence, expressing solidarity with Castrillón’s family and loved ones.

“Today, soccer is in mourning,” one statement read. “We stand together to support his family and all those close to him during this difficult time.”

Castrillón’s death leaves a deep void at Millonarios and across Colombian soccer, where he was widely seen as a player with a future at the highest level.
