We’ve seen plenty of huge scorelines in the 71 editions of the Champions League - both Liverpool and Real Madrid fired eight goals without reply past their respective rivals, Besiktas and Malmo and Bayern Munich famously thumped poor old GNK Dinamo 9-2 in last year’s tournament.

The most number of goals scored in one single Champions League game stands at is 12 - that’s an average of around a goal every eight minutes. The scoreboard read Dortmund 8-4 Legia Warszawa in Matchday 5 of the 2016/17 tournament, a record which may never be beaten.

But it’s usually in the earlier qualifying rounds or the group stage when a game can suddenly turn into a goal fest. Once we get into the knockout round, we rarely see big scorelines.

Why is why Barcelona’s Last 16 return leg against Newcastle was such an eye-opener. The first leg over at St James Park was a cagey affair with Barça sneaking a late equalizer. This evening’s decider produced nine goals, Hansi Flick’s team running out 7-2 winners with Raphina and Lewandowski both on target twice.

Big wins in the first knockout round

Where does it figure among the biggest wins at this stage of the competition? Four Round of 16 matches have finished 7-0: Bayern vs Basel (13/03/12), Bayern vs Shakhtar (11/03/15), Manchester City vs Schalke 04 (12/03/19) and Manchester City vs Leipzig (14/03/23).

Another four ties in the Last 16 ended 7-1: Bayern vs Sporting Clube (10/03/09), Barcelona vs Bayer Leverkusen (07/03/12), Bayern vs Salzburg (08/03/22) and PSV v Arsenal (04/03/25).

Several ties ended 7-2 like tonight’s at Camp Nou: Paris Saint-Germain vs Rosenborg (24/10/2000), Olympique Lyon vs Werder Bremen (8/03/2005), Paris Saint-Germain vs Maccabi Haifa (25/10/2022), Tottenham vs Bayern Munich (01/10/2019) and Barcelona vs Newcastle (18/3/2026).
