The Chelsea clause shaking up the Premier League

A little-known clause in several player contracts has created concern among Chelsea stars ahead of the new season.

Update:

Chelsea’s locker room has been rocked by an issue that has nothing to do with Xabi Alonso’s arrival. Instead, it’s a financial bombshell that directly affects players’ paychecks and has reportedly created growing anxiety inside Stamford Bridge.

According to reports in Spain, several Chelsea players have only recently realized that their contracts included clauses allowing the club to slash their salaries if the team failed to qualify for European competition. Some were reportedly caught completely off guard by the provision.

Chelsea’s disastrous season triggers major salary cuts

Chelsea’s failure to qualify for any UEFA competition, especially the Champions League, has now activated those clauses.

The club’s ownership reportedly inserted the provisions into many player contracts to protect against missing out on the lucrative revenue generated by European soccer. Following a disastrous campaign that saw Enzo Maresca’s side finish 10th in the Premier League, those clauses have now taken effect.

Players affected are beginning to see just how significant the reductions will be as the new season gets underway.

Some salaries reportedly cut in half

According to the report, several of Chelsea’s biggest stars will see their salaries cut by 50%, while others could lose as much as two-thirds of their previous earnings.

Although they will still rank among the better-paid players in world soccer, the reductions leave them well below the salaries typically associated with Premier League stars.

The situation has already prompted a response from several agents.

Chelsea’s stance on transfers

Representatives for some players have reportedly approached Chelsea to discuss renegotiating the contracts or, alternatively, setting reasonable transfer fees to facilitate a move away from the club.

Chelsea’s ownership, however, is said to have made its position clear.

The message has reportedly been straightforward: Any player who wants to leave will have to generate at least the amount Chelsea originally paid to sign him.

In Enzo Fernández’s case, that reportedly means any interested club would need to meet Chelsea’s €120 million (almost $140 million) asking price, matching the fee the Blues paid Benfica to bring the Argentine midfielder to England.

Palmer, Caicedo and João Pedro among those affected

Cole Palmer, Moisés Caicedo and João Pedro are among the players who have reportedly confirmed that the salary reduction clauses exist in their contracts.

Palmer and Fernández, in particular, have already been linked with potential moves away from Stamford Bridge as speculation over their futures continues to grow.
