The English media goes wild over Liverpool’s Luis Díaz decision

Many accuse Liverpool of mismanaging the situation by letting him go to Bayern.

Luis Díaz’s departure from Liverpool to Bayern Munich last summer is coming under increasing scrutiny. In England in particular, influential voices have criticised the deal agreed by the Anfield hierarchy. While Liverpool are enduring a mediocre season, the forward is thriving in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League. He underlined that form on Tuesday against PSG at the Parc des Princes, scoring one of the standout goals of the night. Bayern paid $70 million for him, and they have no regrets. Quite the opposite.

Micah Richards was blunt on the subject. “We have to be absolutely honest here because I just can’t wrap my head around it. Are you telling me you’re selling Luis Díaz to keep Gakpo? Honestly, that’s not just a bad football decision, it’s a shocking one. It’s absolutely ridiculous! You’re sitting there watching Díaz at Bayern Munich, and he’s tearing it apart on the biggest stage. Electrifying. He’s scoring against Real Madrid and PSG, and you’re left wondering, ‘How on earth did Liverpool let him slip through their fingers?’ The guy is a total game-changer. He brings chaos, energy, pace, power, those moments of magic. When he bursts down that wing, it’s unbelievable. Liverpool didn’t just lose a team player, they lost a gem. An absolute gem.”

Jamie Carragher echoed that sentiment. “Luis Díaz was never the right player to sell in the summer, something I still find difficult and frustrating to understand. It’s hard to find any justification for letting him go. Players like him are not easy to replace in the transfer market. You never get tired of watching 90 minutes of football with Díaz involved. What a night and what a performance from him. I never thought I’d see him in another shirt that wasn’t Liverpool’s.”

Oliver Kahn, meanwhile, welcomed the Colombian’s arrival at Bayern. “First, we have to thank Liverpool and their manager, Arne Slot, for letting Luis Díaz go. When Bayern Munich had to choose between signing Luis Díaz or Cody Gakpo, we immediately chose Díaz. It was definitely the right decision. Right now, Lucho is one of the best left wingers in Europe. He has shown that all season, even at 29. He’s excellent at beating defenders, creating chances and scoring goals. He has improved our team significantly. His influence, along with that Colombian fighting spirit and never-give-up attitude, has been key to our success,” the former goalkeeper said.

A few days ago, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard also reflected on Díaz. “You know what? I wouldn’t mind if Díaz came back. We miss him,” Gerrard said on TNT Sports.
