Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández has been linked with a move to Real Madrid for a number of weeks now, ever since comments emerged from the player that ultimately saw him suspended from duties in London.

Now, Javier Pastore, formerly of PSG and now Enzo’s agent, has spoken about the rumours regarding his player...

Real Madrid are also very interested in Enzo Fernández. What’s the situation?

A lot is being said, but the truth is that nothing is really happening. He’s focused on finishing the season strongly at Chelsea FC. It’s true he made some comments that perhaps weren’t ideal at the time, but he didn’t say anything unusual. He simply spoke about Madrid, which he really likes.

But that has been interpreted as meaning he wants to play for Real Madrid…

Whenever he has a day off, he comes to Madrid because I’m there and because he has friends in the city. That’s all it is, nothing more. The aim is to finish the season well at Chelsea, have a strong World Cup, and then we’ll see what happens.

Where does Enzo fit in? What kind of midfield does Real Madrid need?

He’s played in several positions. Over the past two years, his role has changed quite a lot. Under Enzo Maresca, he played much further forward. With Liam Rosenior, he operated more as a holding midfielder. For the Argentine national team, he’s also been used as a more advanced number 8, getting forward and contributing goals. He’s had two seasons with plenty of assists and goals, so it’s natural that coaches see him as more attacking than defensive. That said, he’s a player who can comfortably perform in both roles.

Another Argentine making headlines at Real Madrid, albeit for the wrong reasons, is Franco Mastantuono. What’s going on?

He’s only 18. I wish I’d been at Real Madrid at that age. He’s incredibly talented, which is why he’s there. We have to give him time to adapt. The team also needs to help him express himself. He’s not the kind of player who can decide matches on his own, like Vinícius Júnior or Kylian Mbappé. He’s more of a player who thrives on combinations, linking up with teammates and arriving in the box. With time, I think we’ll see the best version of him.

Are Argentina the favourites for the World Cup?

Yes, mainly because they are the defending champions and a team that has been performing very well. They’ve won their recent qualifiers and friendlies, and the players are full of confidence. Of course, being the Argentina national football team makes them one of the favourites, but there are many other teams at a very high level. We’ll have to see how everyone arrives. There’s still a month of competition left, but hopefully the players will be in top form.

And Spain? We didn’t get the Finalissima we were hoping for…

It’s a real shame, because it would have been a great test ahead of a World Cup, facing another of the favourites. Spain national football team have some outstanding young players, so it’s disappointing that the match didn’t happen. Hopefully we’ll see it in the near future.

Did you see the PSG vs Bayern match?

I was on a plane at the time, but I managed to watch the last 25 minutes, and it was a fantastic match. I’ve since watched it in full. It’s exactly the kind of football people love to see. Both teams are incredibly attacking. Even with Paris Saint-Germain leading 5–2, they kept pushing forward. The tie is still wide open. I have a lot of faith in PSG, so let’s see if they can reach another UEFA Champions League Final.
