The ‘new Old Trafford’: Manchester United shares plans for gigantic stadium
The Red Devils have shared new details about the ‘Wembley of the North’, set to be built less than 400 yards from the current Theatre of Dreams.
Months after unveiling plans for a £2 billion ‘new Old Trafford’, and just days after reaching an agreement to acquire the land where the next Theatre of Dreams will rise, Manchester United’s ambitious stadium project continues to take shape. In an official statement today, the Premier League confirmed the proposed location for a new 100,000-seat stadium. Dubbed the ‘Wembley of the North’, it will be the largest stadium in Europe and one of the biggest sports venues in the world.
“Flagship landmark” next to Old Trafford
Larger than the new Spotify Camp Nou, Wembley Stadium, or Santiago Bernabéu, the Manchester club confirmed that its new home “will sit at the heart of a new Stadium District, just under 400 yards north-west of the existing Old Trafford stadium.” It is little surprise that United itself has described the project as a “masterplan.”
The ambitious redevelopment scheme for the Trafford Wharfside area will create a destination “purpose-built for sport, entertainment and year-round activity, with the new stadium serving as the flagship landmark”. Alongside “new and improved public transport links, enhanced rail connectivity, and extensive walking and cycling infrastructure,” the Red Devils say the project is expected to generate “48,000 local jobs and 15,000 new homes”.
When will the ‘new Old Trafford’ be ready?
As the club first revealed in March 2025, the new stronghold is expected to cost more than $2.5 billion and is projected to be completed by 2030, or no later than 2032. Collette Roche, CEO of the stadium project, says the planned arena will be “ideally located” by Old Trafford, ensuring the preservation of the “heritage, traditions and matchday rituals that are so important to our supporters”. At the same time, the club’s plans minimizes disruption to the first team, which would continue playing at Old Trafford until construction of the new Theatre of Dreams is complete.
