Cruz Azul and the Vancouver Whitecaps face off in Mexico City on Sunday in the highly-anticipated 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup final. And there will be an extra bonus for the winners, who will secure the final vacant place at the 2029 Club World Cup.

Vancouver, unquestionably the breakout team of the tournament, will also be aiming to make history by becoming the first Canadian side to win the cup and only the fourth MLS side to be crowned champions.

This match will be their ultimate test. The Whitecaps arrive in peak form, having emerged through tough ties against Monterrey and, most notably, Inter Miami. Now, their showdown at Estadio Olímpico Universitario stands as the most important game in the club’s history.

With home-field advantage on their side, Cruz Azul enter as the favorites—a factor that adds another layer of difficulty to Vancouver’s quest.

Under the leadership of Jesper Sørensen, the Whitecaps are dreaming big. A victory would cement their place among the select few MLS teams that have managed to claim this prestigious Concacaf title.

If the Vancouver Whitecaps emerge victorious against Cruz Azul this Sunday at Estadio Olímpico Universitario, they will become the fourth MLS club to capture this prestigious regional title.

DC United were the first, beating Toluca 1-0 in the 34th edition of the tournament, held in Washington DC in 1998.

LA Galaxy repeated the feat two years later, clinching the 2000 tournament after defeating Honduran side, Olimpia.

MLS Concacaf Champions Cup winners

  • 1998 DC United 1-0 Toluca
  • 2000 LA Galaxy 3-2 Olimpia
  • 2022 UNAM 2-2 Seattle Sounders (first leg)
  • 2022 Seattle Sounders 3-0 UNAM (second leg) - Seattle win 2-5 agg.

The tournament was played under a different format at the time, with just eight matches (quarter finals, semi-finals and final), compared to 50 today.

The last MLS team to lift the trophy was the Seattle Sounders who beat Pumas on home turf in 2022. Since then we’ve had two Mexican champions - León in 2023 and Pachuca last year.

Now, the Whitecaps are just one step away from rewriting the history books.
