This is Cruz Azul’s plan after key forward’s injury
Following Ángel Sepúlveda’s injury, there has been much speculation about the signing of a new striker this transfer window.
After a tough match against Chivas and an unexpected injury to to a player who has arguably been their standout performer over the last two tournaments, Cruz Azul heads into the international break with a deep sigh of relief. The FIFA window couldn’t have come at a better time for La Máquina, given the challenges currently surrounding the squad.
Ángel Sepúlveda’s absence is a direct hit to Nicolás Larcamón’s tactical setup. While the break will help with his recovery, it’s highly unlikely that “El Cuate” will be available for Cruz Azul’s next two Apertura 2025 fixtures - against Pachuca and Juárez. Gabriel “El Toro” Fernández is the natural replacement, but what happens if he picks up a knock?
Cruz Azul’s attacking plan
According to reporting from Adrián Esparza Oteo, Cruz Azul’s roster plans for the current semester are already set. Despite the urgent need for a striker with Sepúlveda sidelined, Mateo Levy is committed to the U-20 World Cup, and Fernández is still working his way back to full match fitness. All signs point to the club standing pat as the transfer window closes.
Instead, the club is expected to pursue a center forward in the winter transfer window. In the meantime, the coaching staff is placing full trust in Ángel Baltazar’s timely recovery and hoping Fernández stays healthy.
Speculation around a potential move for Luka Jovic stirred excitement among fans, and while that deal didn’t materialize, it’s clear that Cruz Azul is serious about adding more firepower up front. For now, it’s a waiting game - either the current squad steps up to meet expectations, or the club finally lands the marquee striker it’s been chasing when the next window opens.
