Real Madrid are expected to announce the signing of Kylian Mbappé, the explosive French forward who led his nation to the World Cup in 2018.

Mbappé has been a target for Madrid since he was a teenager, when he was invited by the club to train at their facilities in the Spanish capital and meet his idols. It was Paris Saint-Germain who prised him from Monaco as an 18-year-old, paying €180 million ($195m) for the teenage sensation.

Since then Mbappé has been the subject of multiple bids from Real Madrid, all of which had been rejected by PSG. However to keep their star the French side have been willing to fork out truly enormous sums on his salary, signing-on fees and loyalty bonuses.

How much was Kylian Mbappé's PSG contract worth?

The most recent contract signed by Mbappé was agreed in 2022. PSG announced that they had secured the young forward on a three-year contract extension, although it later transpired that the third year of the deal was only an option, one that remained in Mbappé's control.

Supporters were delighted to have kept hold of their star talent but the club was forced to make a huge financial outlay to do so. The New York Times calculates that the three-year deal was worth an astonishing €630 million ($681m) to the Frenchman.

His basic wage was around €6 million per month, which gave him an after-tax monthly salary of €2.7 million.

This, however, was only one side of the incredible package offered to Mbappé. His deal also included a staggering $180 million signing-on bonus spread over the course of his three-year contract. In addition to the signing-on fee Mbappé also gets a loyalty payment for each year he remains at the club. The first instalment was thought to be €70 million and it rose in value each season that the Frenchman stayed at the club.

Of course, Mbappe will also be handsomely rewarded for his time in the Spanish capital. Real Madrid have reportedly agreed a deal that would see the Frenchman receive around €150 million as a signing-on fee, money that the club has saved by signing Mbappé on a free transfer. In total Madrid are expected to spend around €500 million ($540m) to bring Mbappé to the Santiago Bernabeu.
