Tigres and Monterrey lead the way in best attended stadiums in Liga MX 2022 Apertura

Pumas will be hoping that the Dani Alves effect can boost things on the pitch as loyal fans still flock to the Estadio Olimpico Universitario.

Of the traditional ‘big four’ in Mexican football, it’s struggling Pumas UNAM that lead the way when it comes to the highest aggregate attendance from the four clubs for the 2022 Apertura to date.

Pumas have played six games so far at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario and saw how over 45,000 fans turned up for the derby game against Club America. There has been a drop-off as the team struggles with matchday six against table toppers Monterrey saw just over 26,000 fans pack the stadium.

The club are worried that the ‘Dani Alves effect’ may have worn off however with just 12,000 fans attending the recent home game against Santos Laguna game. Despite the recent drop-off, Pumas however remain the highest of the ‘traditional big four’ but behind best attended clubs in the country in Tigres and Monterrey.

America revival

With Club América’s strong run in the Apertura, the average attendance for home games at the Azteca has never dropped below the 20,000 mark with derby against Cruz Azul seeing over 45,000 supporters show up to see the Aguillas put their city neighbours to the sword in an emphatic 7-0 win last Sunday.
