Miguel Herrera has left Tigres after failing to win a Liga MX trophy in his 18 months in charge of the club
To the surprise of many, Tigres have confirmed that boss Miguel Herrera has left the club, meaning there will be in a new man in the dugout for the 2023 Clausura tournament.
Herrera’s Tigres contract ended with six months left to run
The club announced on social media that it had chosen to sever ties with the controversial coach, who still had six months of his contract left to run. Tigres president Mauricio Culebro revealed in an official club statement that Los Auriazules had decided to terminate Herrera’s contract after careful consideration.
The Monterrey outfit chose not to elaborate further on the matter and are now in the process of searching for the ideal candidate to take over the reins for the Clausura tournament.
“After conducting an in-depth review, the decision has been made to end our relationship with Miguel Herrera and his coaching staff. We thank Miguel and his staff for the professionalism they have shown in the three tournaments they have overseen and we wish them every success in their future projects. We will announce our new coaching staff in the coming days,” read Culerbo’s short ‘statement to the fans’.
Tigres eliminated from the 2022 Apertura tournament in the quarter-finals
Doubts about whether Herrera would remain in the dugout began after Tigres’ elimination of the recently-finished 2022 Apertura tournament at the hands of Pachuca at the quarter-final stage, a desperately disappointing result considering the amount of investment that had gone into strengthening the roster.
In addition, it had been speculated that one of the primary reasons for Herrera’s departure was his assessment that the playing roster was “too old” in the aftermath of the aforementioned elimination against Los Tuzos.
The experienced manager leaves his position having taken charge of 63 matches, posting 32 victories, 13 draws and 18 losses. Decent numbers in theory but Herrera has paid the price for coming up short in terms of meeting Tigres’ objective of winning a trophy.
In Herrera’s three tournaments in charge, the club reached the semi-finals of the 2021 Apertura (losing to León) and 2022 Clausura (losing to Atlas), before being defeated by Pachuca in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Apertura.
