Tigres vs Toluca: Who has the most expensive starting XI in the Concacaf Champions Cup final?
The Concacaf Champions Cup final is this weekend and two Liga MX giants square off as Tigres UANL and Toluca square off from Estadio Nemesio Diez.
It should come as no surprise that two Mexican clubs have made it all the way to the Concacaf Champions Cup final. The tournament has been dominated by Liga MX sides, and on Saturday night Toluca will host Tigres UANL from Estadio Nemesio Diez.
Liga MX dominates CCC, again
Toluca will be in front of their home fans, and Los Diablos Rojos will be looking for their third CCC title in club history. After a disappointing early exit in the Liga MX Clausura playoffs, they turn their attention to the international competition. Pachuca beat the Concacaf Champions Cup finalists 3-0 over the two quarterfinal legs, after a fifth placed finish in the league table.
Tigres UANL have won this competition just once before, back in 2020 but they are back in the final for the first time since four finals appearances in five years from 2015 to 2020. They are coming off of a heartbreaking result against Chivas in quarterfinals of the Clausura playoffs. A 2-0 loss saw the tie end 3-3 but Tigres lost on the away goals rule which ended their domestic campaign.
Now the two teams will meet in Toluca with a title on the line. Seeing two Mexican finalists isn´t much of a shock when you consider this tournament has been won by Liga MX clubs three years running and 19 of the last 20 seasons. Both of these sides have stacked squads with internationally known names. So lets take a look at the battle of the bank.
Toluca vs Tigres in numbers
According to transfermarkt.com it’s Toluca that has the more expensive squad coming in at a grand total of €87 million ($100 million). They have the competitions top scorer in Paulihno with 8 goals, and the Portuguese striker is valued at €5.5 million ($6.4 million). Mexican international Marcel Ruiz is the most valuable player on the squad with a price tag of €10 million ($11.6 million), while Mexico teammate Alexis Vega is priced at €8 million ($9.28 million).
Tigres have a lightly less expensive squad, but they have some names that will ring a bell. Their squad have a total value of just over €81 million ($94 million), with former Atletico de Madrid man Angel Correa is the most recognizable face. He has played a key role in Tigres run to the final, and he is has a price tag of €8 million €8 million ($9.28 million). Rodrigo Aguirre is UANL’s top scorer with four goals in seven matches but he is valued at just €2.3 million. Jesus Angelo and Diego Lainez are headed to the World Cup with Mexico, but it’s Juan Brunetta that is the top valued Tigres player with a tag of €9 million (€10.4 million).
Transfers, values and price tags won’t mean a thing when these two sides take the pitch on Saturday night. These two teams played to a 0-0 draw in their only match up during the Liga MX Clausura. They also met in the Apertura final with Toluca winning in penalties. Toluca earned the right to host the final after finishing at the top of the competitions cumulative standings, which could give them the slight edge not just in the value of the squad but on the pitch.
