USMNT set for highly anticipated Mexico clash in the autumn

The U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team will be heading to Mexico in the autumn, to face perennial rivals Mexico.

The Mexican coach, Javier Aguirre, recently visited the Verde Valle facilities in Zapopan, Jalisco, where he watched a Chivas training session before officially announcing the friendly match between the Mexican national team and the United States. This match, part of the preparation for the 2026 World Cup, will take place at Estadio Akron, home to Mexican giants, Chivas.

In a press conference, Aguirre, along with Ivar Sisniega (President of the Mexican Football Federation), Amaury Vergara (President of Club Deportivo Guadalajara), and Enrique Alfaro (Governor of Jalisco), confirmed that the match against the United States will be held on October 15 at Chivas’ home ground.

“I don’t like calling them friendlies because they’re preparation matches, and against a tough opponent like the United States, it’s going to be a great test. What better place than Estadio Akron to host this match? That’s why this FIFA international date is so important. We’ll also have a special tribute to players who have meant a lot to Mexican soccer history. We’re confident it will be a celebration, a great event, not just for the locals, but for fans from all over the country,” said Ivar Sisniega.

“This is something that fills me with excitement, personally. Guadalajara is our home. For me, for the players, and for the coaching staff, it brings us great peace to come home, and I’m happy and very grateful for this opportunity. Thank you for the invitation, and we’ll be here,” added Javier Aguirre.

In keeping with his inclusive approach, Aguirre emphasized that as long as he’s in charge, no player will be shut out from the chance to proudly wear the green jersey of Mexico. He acknowledged there is a generational shift taking place but remains focused on building the best starting eleven throughout this World Cup cycle.

“The roster will be made public in a week, but it’s already taking shape. We have a lot of talent, many players, and the demands must be high. That’s how we’ve operated for years, and that’s how we must continue. We need players with the right profile, the right mentality, and who take pride in wearing the jersey. As long as they’re Mexican and playing well, they’re considered—no one is shut out. I only look at the player’s level and capability,” Aguirre emphasized.

“I understand the generational change, and I fully support it, but we need to form the best team for the World Cup. We must choose those who are in the best shape at that moment, and I’m not worried about the physical and mental condition of the players. Wearing the jersey is priceless,” the national coach concluded.
