The 2026 World Cup is over for the United States men’s team. Mauricio Pochettino’s troops suffered a painful 1-4 defeat to Belgium in Seattle to become the third and last of the tournament’s three co-hosts to bow out in the Last 16.

With little under a fortnight to go until the final, now is the time for reflection for the USMNT. The only consolation is a share of the prize money, from a huge $703 million pool - almost double the $440 million distributed at Qatar 2022.

Back in December, the FIFA Council approved a record-breaking financial contribution of $727 million but at the FIFA Congress in Vancouver on April 28, that figure was increased by 15% to a whopping $871 million - $703 million of it destined to participating teams in prize money.

Bonuses for reaching the Round of 16

Each of the 48 teams will receive a guaranteed base payment of $12.5 million which includes $10 million in qualification money and $2.5 million “to cover preparation costs”. Additional money will be distributed based on how far each team progresses.

On top of the $12.5 million base payment, the USMNT will receive $11 million for reaching the Round of 32 and $15 million for making it as far as the Round of 16. In total, $36.5 million.

Had they made it to the quarter finals, the USMNT would have raked in another $19 million, while the team that lifts the trophy in New Jersey on July 19 will get a $50 million payout.
