2023 GOLD CUP
USMNT’s Ferreira reacts after history-making consecutive hat-trick
The son of David Ferreira was the star of the United States’ 6-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago securing a quarterfinals place in the 2023 Gold Cup.
The CONCACAF Gold Cup has a scorer with Colombian blood in the United States men’s national team. Jesús Ferreira, son of David who is now Harold Rivera’s assistant coach at Unión Magdalena, scored a hat-trick in the 6-0 thumping win over Trinidad and Tobago in Charlotte in the final group game. Yes, of course we brought you the game live!
Ferreira on fire for USMNT
We didn’t have to wait long for the first of his goals. In the 14th minute DeJuan Jones appeared on the left and put it in the middle for his number ‘9′ to control with his right before dispatching from close range.
Ferreira’s second came in minute 38, taking advantage of an error by the goalkeeper, at the second attempt. The hat-trick was completed from the spot on the stroke of half time after Djordje Mihailovic was fouled in the box.
Young Cade Cowell, who came on in the second half with the game already won, scored the fourth, taking advantage of a bad delivery behind the rival, and that was followed by goals from Gianluca Busio and Brandon Vázquez.
Ferreira makes history in the Gold Cup
As well as helping his national team to the ‘W’, Ferreira’s triple also gave him a place in the history books. This came about as he had scored another hat-trick in the 0-6 win over Saint Kitts and Nevis, making him the first player in Gold Cup history to score two hat-tricks in the same competition.
Six goals have him, unsurprisingly, leading the scorers table and it is a record that had not been seen in the group stage since 1993, when Zague scored an incredible nine with the Mexico shirt on, seven of them in the 9-0 win over Martinique. El Tri took the title that year and the striker of Brazilian descent was the top scorer with 11 goals.
The United States now advance to the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup in first place in Group A with seven points, having begun their participation with a 1-1 tie against Jamaica. Now they await the second team in Group D, which at the moment is Guatemala.
