Valentín Castellanos set to join Leeds United
Several clubs have shown an interest in signing the New York City FC ace after a breakout season in 2021, but the Premier League side is in pole position.
It seems like Valentín Castellanos has made his decision about making the switch to Europe’s top tier after months of speculation regarding the future of one of the best strikers in Major League Soccer.
After he won the Golden Boot and the MVP, and led New York City FC to the 2021 MLS Cup, several teams, like River Plate, made a formal offer but it was not good enough for NYCFC.
The Premier League his next destination
The New York-based team has put a $20 million price tag on Castellanos and no other club interested is willing to pay that sum of money. But Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch knows about Castellanos’ talent and scouts have been keeping a close eye on the 23-year-old.
The Premier League club want to increase their firepower after avoiding relegation last season and according to 90min, Leeds are the team most interested in signing Castellanos during the summer transfer window.
Even Manchester City’s boss, Pep Guardiola, praised the Argentine striker at the end of the 2021 MLS season. It is expected that Leeds will make a formal bid in the upcoming days and he could join Brenden Aaronson, who was signed last week from RB Salzburg, in a powerful attacking duo at Elland Road.
The 23-year-old striker has scored 47 goals and provided 19 assists in 110 appearances in Major League Soccer. Other Premier League teams that have also shown interest are West Ham, Newcastle and Everton.
