River Plate in pole position to sign Valentín Castellanos
Several clubs have shown interest in signing the New York City FC striker, but the Argentine club seems to be his next destination.
Valentín Castellanos is eager to return home after a breakout season with New York City Football Club last year. The Argentine striker won the Golden Boot and led the New York-based team to win the 2021 MLS Cup.
River Plate to sign Castellanos
Several clubs are keen on signing Valentín Castellanos during the winter transfer window, but NYCFC has put a $20 million price tag on him. The New York-based team wants to mantain him for the 2022 MLS regular season as he is under contract until 2025.
According to multiple reports, the Major League Soccer club has not received a formal offer from the Argentine striker, but River Plate is leading the race to sign him. Unofficially, both clubs have started conversations regarding Valentín Castellanos´future.
Rumors intensified after River Plate sold Julian Álvarez to Manchester City for a reported fee of $27.5 million. So the Argentine club has the money to bring in the 2021 MLS Golden Boot winner, but they want to bring his price down.
ESPN confirmed that New York City FC received a $12.5 million offer from former Copa Libertadores winners Palmeira earlier this week, but it was rejected. So River Plate could make a $15 million offer to sign Castellanos, but NYCFC are fixed in the price tag they put on him after the interest grew from so many clubs around the world.
