The final whistle in the game between Chivas and Querétaro was the signal for a huge rush of adrenaline to surge through everyone involved with the club from Guadalajara. After the embarrassing defeat against Tigres last Saturday on match day 14, the red and white side rapidly demanded a positive result against the club who have won just 4 games all season.

And it came to pass. It took a lot of effort and Chivas suffered hugely, but they managed to scrape past Querétaro 2-1 on the night, resulting in a euphoric Veljko Paunovic after the game, who recognised the work his team put in to achieve the much-needed result. The manager has had a rough time of late, and was even forced to come out and dispel links to a move to Spain with LaLiga side Almería.

Paunovic’s one-minute speech in front of the press

After the game, in the post-match press conference, Paunovic did not stay for long in front of the media, deciding instead to shoot off after around a minute speaking to the awaiting microphones. He hardly warmed the chair below him before leaving, but he still squeezed in time to congratulate his players.

“I’m proud, so, so proud of the play”, Paunovic said, “the effort and the courage we showed today on the pitch, as a team, of all the players, all the group who worked today. Therefore, that’s all I’m going to say, with that I start and end my press conference. We played a great game and the players put in a huge amount of effort to get the three points. I’m proud of everyone. Goodnight. I wish you all the best of luck. Bye!”

Chivas looking to build on the win

And with that, he was off. After the game, it appeared that he had much do do: after having the tie under control at 2-0, it ended up being a game of huge suffering and one in which Chivas had to work incredibly hard to win: in the end, they still failed to convince.

They now have to look ahead as their next game takes place on Saturday in a tough run in, at the Estadio Akron against Cruz Azul. What they will be is calm, as one’s mind always works better after a win than a defeat. And with that hard-fought win, Chivas are back within the Liguilla places of the 2023 Apertura in Liga MX.
