Everything to play for after Apertura 2023 matchday 14
Three games remain in the Apertura season and as yet, every team still holds a mathematical chance of securing a post season place.
The end of the Apertura 2023 is nigh after matchday 14 this weekend where América reasserted their dominance with a 0-3 win away to Monterrey. The Coapa side are now clear leaders with a five point margin over Tigres who too were big away winners this weekend, recording an emphatic 0-4 win at the Akron Stadium against Chivas in what was a repeat of the 2023 Clausura final.
The weekend’s action began with the Pumas falling to Necaxa 1-0 in Aguascalientes; Querétaro were beaten by Mazatlán with a 3-0 scoreline and Cruz Azul finally won at home after a barren run of six months by defeating León with a solitary goal deciding the match.
The battle for a top 10 place
Earlier this year, both the FMF (Mexican FA) and Liga MX agreed recently to limit the number of teams progressing to post season from 12 to ten.
The top six sides advance to the playoff quarterfinals and will be joined by the winners of the play-in games as 7th face 8th and the loser of that game set to play the winner of 9th against 10th in the general table.
With just three games to go in the Apertura, no side has been cut adrift with all of the 18 teams still holding out mathematical chances of extending the season.
This week will be decisive in determining what teams advance with matchday 15 set for midweek before the 16th round of Apertura games are scheduled to be played next weekend.
