Vinicius will captain El Clásico. He has worn the armband before, but never in circumstances like these. Nothing even comes close. And given the current situation, this is about far more than captaincy. These are times of questioned leadership. Of a lack of figures who set the standard. Of growing murmurings around the club.

Real Madrid fans are asking whether any of the four captains can truly embody what Sergio Ramos, Fernando Hierro or Juanito once represented: a player whose mere presence becomes a beacon. Someone who commands and inspires respect. The armband is far more than a tool for speaking to the referee. It carries responsibility. And today, that responsibility falls to Vinicius.

The tension only intensified this week, reflecting the turmoil at Valdebebas. The absence of a figure capable of ending the Valverde-Tchouameni dispute with a single word has been impossible to ignore. A player strong enough to hold the dressing room together, even in difficult moments. The concern deepened when it became clear that the one who lost his composure was also the one expected to restore order: the second captain.

No one questions Dani Carvajal’s status as a club legend, but doubts remain about his ability to lead the group. The same scrutiny surrounds Vinicius, the third captain. And there are similar questions about Thibaut Courtois, the fourth captain.

How are the captains chosen?

In the simplest terms, it comes down to seniority. The player who has been at the club the longest is first in line for the captain’s armband. Every team handles it differently. Some dressing rooms vote on their captains, while others use a mixed system. At Real Madrid, seniority is the rule. Asked yesterday whether he would consider changing the system, Álvaro Arbeloa was brief and direct: “I am very, very, very happy with the work and dedication of my four captains.”

This season, though, there have effectively only been two: Dani Carvajal and Federico Valverde. Valverde has worn the armband more often, but neither will be able to do so in the Clásico. Which means it is time for the third captain. It is Vinicius’ turn.

The reason he holds that position comes down to the finest of margins. Vinicius arrived first, signing on July 12, 2018, just after turning 18. Thibaut Courtois did not arrive until August 9. A small detail, but one that tipped the scales. The first time Vinicius wore the armband as a starter came on February 26, 2025, at the Reale Arena. At the time, he was technically the fifth captain, but neither Luka Modrić nor Lucas Vázquez was available, alongside Carvajal and Valverde.

Now, all eyes are on him. Not only because of his football, although that is always part of the equation, but because he has been asked to lead. To be the light for a team that appears to be drifting in darkness. To rally the group, to reassure it, to captain it. The opportunity arrives at perhaps the most delicate moment of the season in terms of leadership, precisely when the lack of strong voices in the dressing room is under scrutiny.

From Valdebebas, the message is that Vinicius is one of the most loved figures in the squad. A player close to every group in the dressing room, without exception. But there are still doubts about whether he possesses that collective authority that defines great captains.

That is his challenge. Tonight gives him the chance to make a statement in the match where it is needed most. And in a stadium where he has historically struggled. He has scored only once in five visits to the Camp Nou, and not in La Liga. It came in the second leg of the 2022-23 Copa del Rey semi-finals, a 0-4 victory. Overall, FC Barcelona are the opponents he has faced most often in his career: 23 matches, eight goals and seven assists. Half of those goals have come in Super Cup fixtures.

He carries a double burden tonight: to lead, and to rise at the Camp Nou. And now, the opportunity is his. Vinicius will captain Real Madrid.
