Watch: David Martinez game winner to put LAFC past Alajuelense in CONCACAF round of 16
LAFC were on the brink of extra time in Costa Rica but David Martinez came up with some late game heroics to send his side to the quarters from Costa Rica.
LAFC is moving on to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF quarterfinals, but it didn’t come without some suffering from Marc Dos Santos´side. A wonder strike from David Martinez decided a tight two legged tie that was destined for extra time from Costa Rica.
Lights, camera, action for LAFC
After a busy night of Champions League, the world switched focus to the other round of 16 going on across the pond and LAFC started the return fixtures with a bang on Tuesday night. After a 1-1 draw at BMO Stadium the MLS side had it all to play for away from home.
The Ticos took the lead early in the second leg with a Santiago van der Putten goal in the forth minute and took that lead into halftime. Nathan Ordaz pulled the MLS side level with a goal in the 50th and it seemed as though extra time would be needed, but David Martinez had other ideas.
The 20 year old Venezuelan settled the ball in the midfield took a touch, lifted his head and fired a rocket into the back of the Alajuelense net in the second minute of stoppage time to settle scores from the Estadio Alejandro Morero Soto. It’s his fourth goal in all competitions and he is unlikely to score a more timely goal for his squad this season.
