Update:

On a wild evening of midweek MLS action, Toronto FC goalkeeper Luka Gavran stole the headlines with a towering late header to earn his side a point against Philadelphia Union.

Toronto were 3-2 down in the sixth minute of stoppage time when Gavran leapt highest in the penalty box to nod the ball past Andre Blake and into the back of the net. The late leveler sent the BMO Stadium crowd wild, celebrating the first goalkeeper goal in Toronto FC history.

Gavran has been a backup for most of his time with Toronto but has been trusted with the starter’s jersey this year by coach Robin Fraser. After Wednesday’s game he was interviewed by the AppleTV team and revealed that he was no stranger to goal-scoring in his youth.

“I can’t even really remember what happened. I think there were like ten seconds, I looked to the bench, and everyone was waving me down to go,” Gavran explained. “I used to be a No. 9 so, you know, I’m used to it.”

With Wednesday’s goal Gavran becomes just the third goalkeeper in MLS history to make it onto the scoresheet. The first to do it was Danny Cepero, who was playing for the New York Red Bulls in 2008 when an 80-yard free kick bounced over his counterpart and into the back of the net. The next was in 2010 when Columbus Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer scored against Toronto FC at BMO Stadium.

Toronto fans had to wait for 16 years but they’ve now finally seen a goalkeeper goal from their own team. It came on a thrilling night of MLS action with a pair of 4-4 draws between the Red Bulls and DC United, and New York City FC and Cincinnati.
