Manchester City begin the defence of their Premier League title with a visit to London to face West Ham United on Sunday, as Erling Braut Haaland prepares to make his top-flight debut for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Haaland, a $75m signing from Borussia Dortmund this summer, enjoyed a less than impressive competitive bow for City in last Saturday’s Community Shield defeat to Liverpool. Most notably, the Norwegian missed a near-open goal late on at the King Power Stadium, striking the top of the bar from six yards out.
“When I look back, it’s like, ‘How can you miss there?’” Haaland told an interview with the Athletic. “But, you know, this will probably happen to me again. That’s football. You say you didn’t sleep well and I never sleep good after games. But it’s kind of motivation, to score or to do something in the next game.”
In David Moyes’ second spell as Hammers boss, West Ham have enjoyed two impressive seasons, finishing sixth and seventh in the Premier League, respectively, and reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League last term.
The East Londoners have restricted City to a point at the London Stadium in each of the past two campaigns - but their last home league win over the Sky Blues came back in May 2014.
