What are Club América’s heaviest defeats in Liga MX at Estadio Azteca in recent years?

Pachuca defeated América by three goals to nil in Mexico City to continue their fantastic record against Las Águilas.

Club América were put to the sword on Saturday by Pachuca, who only needed 30 minutes to wrap up all three points in a convincing 3-0 victory at Estadio Azetca. Chofis López, Daniel Hernández and Roberto de la Rosa found the net for the Liga MX Apertura 2022 winners as Las Águilas fell to a rare home defeat.

Pachuca’s superb record against Club América

Of course, it has been well-documented that Los Tuzos are something of a bogey team for América, which is clear for all to see when you look back through results between the two clubs over a fairly length period. After Saturday’s victory, they have now won 14, drawn nine and lost nine of their last 32 matches at Azteca and are the only club in Liga MX to have won more than they have lost away to América.

While Ame have suffered a few defeats in their home ground by the same scoreline, it seems fitting that the last time they suffered a ‘heavier’ home league loss - assuming 4-1 is heavier than 3-0 - came against Pachuca back on 23 January 2016.

In those intervening years, Tigres (31 July 2016), Chivas (28 August 2016), León (10 February 2019) and Necaxa (1 March 2020) have all won by three goals to nil at Azteca. Cruz Azul recorded a 4-1 away against América in the Copa MX but that tie was played at Estadio Olímpico de Universitario in Mexico City.

When was the last time América lost by more than three goals at Estadio Azteca?

The last time Las Águilas were defeated at Estadio Azteca by a bigger margin was on 19 April 2015, when they suffered a shock thrashing by Querétaro, with none other than Brazilian legend Ronaldinho coming off the bench to score twice late on in a 4-0 victory for Los Gallos Blancos.

To add to the feeling that Pachuca have really got América’s number, Los Azulcremas unbeaten start to the Clausura 2023 is now over and their long undefeated streak at Azteca, which stretched back more than a year, is also no more. And yes, prior to Saturday, Guillermo Almada’s side were the last team to have beaten them in their own back yard, posting a 3-1 victory on 20 February 2022.
