CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
What Champions League record did Carlo Ancelotti equal in Real Madrid’s semi-final first leg draw against Manchester City?
The Madrid boss has won more Champions League trophies than anyone else and has now equalled a new record in the competition.
When you think of Carlo Ancelotti, you think of the Champions League. Simple as that. The Italian is the most decorated manager in European Cup/Champions League history, having won the trophy on four occasions. In addition to his two victories with Real Madrid (2013-14 and 2021-22), he has won the tournament twice with Milan (2002-03 and 2006-07). He also won the European Cup twice with the Rossoneri as a player in 1988-89 and 1989-90.
Ancelotti has taken charge of most Champions League victories
On top of that, earlier in the season he overtook legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s number of victories in the competition in a home win over Scottish champions Celtic, which was Ancelotti’s 103rd in the Champions League. He is now on 107 after two wins apiece against Liverpool and Chelsea.
When will the Real Madrid boss break the record?
And, in his team’s draw against Manchester City, Ancelotti has now equalled one of the only records he still has to go after in Europe’s elite club competition. Ferguson had also been the manager who had taken charge of most Champions League matches (190), a tally which the Italian drew level with on Tuesday night at the Bernabéu.
Ironically, the last Champions League game the Scot ever managed was against Madrid, who knocked the Red Devils out in the round of 16 in the 2012-13 season, his last in management. On Wednesday next week, Ancelotti will take the record from him outright just a few miles from Old Trafford, where Ferguson spent 26 years of his managerial career.
