With 35 titles across all competitions (a record thirteen league titles, as well as a record six Copa México titles, and six Campeón de Campeones cups, along with ten FIFA recognized club trophies) Club América is the most successful club in the country and ‘Las Aguilas are one of the two most-supported clubs in Mexico (along with Chivas Guadalajara) and the only side in the nation never to have been relegated.

Current slump

It’s fair to say that the traditional powerhouse and most successful Mexican club side are in something of a slump. The side from Mexico DF are currently enduring their third-worst league start in history sitting in 15th place in the 18 team Apertura 2022 (four points from four games) and Las Águilas haven’t lifted a trophy since the 2019 Apertura.

An attempt to bring themselves back into the foreground of Mexican football, a few years ago América turned to an old acquaintance of Real Madrid: Santiago Solari.

The Argentine took América to the final of the Concacaf Champions League in 2021 and finished the Apertura as leaders, but Monterrey and Pachuca frustrated Las Águilas’ dream and after more poor domestic form, Solari was relieved of his duties with current manager Fernando Ortiz currently overseeing the side.

2022 Apertura

With only a handful of games having being played in the 2022 Apertura competition, America languish in 15th place and demanding fans will expect nothing less than a play-off with 12 of the top 18 advancing to the post-season.

A morale boosting 2-2 draw mid-week against Spanish league champions Real Madrid will help Fernando Ortiz’s men as they face Club Leon in the next round of Liga MX games with the Argentine coach facing a stern test to bring the glory days back to the Estadio Azteca faithful.
