Thursday is the day when the semi-final of the Concacaf Nations League takes place between the USMNT and Mexico. It will, once again, be an interesting episode of an intriguing rivalry in North America. The Allegiant Stadium is the place where one of the finalists will be made known.

It has been a while since the Mexican side have landed a blow on the USMNT, way back on 6 September 2019, making the sense of urgency in Diego Cocca’s side quite noticeable; as for the USMNT players in the roster, despite the high stakes, have good reason to come into the game with their chests puffed out.

How to watch:

When did Mexico last win against the USA?

The last time Mexico managed to get past their rivals was thanks to Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández, Érick Guitiérrez and Uriel Antuna, who all scored at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey in 2019.

Nations League Final 2021

The first time the two sides met during the Nations League was in the final of the 2020-21 edition, where the Stars and Stripes took the title thanks to a 3-2 win over El Tri at Denver’s Empower Field Stadium. It was Captain America, Christian Pulisic, who appeared in the 114th minute of the game to score a penalty; Gio Reyna and Weston McKennie both got their names on the scoresheet.

The next hit came just after the Nations League victory, on 1 August. A Miles Robinson header that was fired past Alfredo Talavera in the 117th minute gave the win to Gregg Berhalter’s USMNT late on.

On 12 November 2021, the US got yet another win over Mexico and signed off a fantastic year in their soccer history, feeling truly like a team that could not only compete with their rivals but beat them comfortably. They beat The Aztecs in Cincinnati, with Pulisic and McKennie getting the goals against a Tata Martino led Mexico.

Qatar World Cup qualification (away)

Mexico welcomed the USMNT to the Estadio Azteca on 24 March 2022, an ideal setting to get one over on their rivals in front of their own fans. But it was not to be, with Berhalter’s side dominating a game that finished 0-0 after some Guillermo Ochoa heroics.

Friendly game

The last game on the list between the USMNT and Mexico was back in April of 2023, and took place at State Farm in Arizona. Uriel Antuna scored for the Mexicans in the 55th minute but Jesús Ferreira equalised late on, with less than ten minutes to go. The game, despite not winning, was not seen as a bad result, given the fact that it was the first time Diego Cocca had faced the US.
