The festive period is upon us and with it, a selection of Premier League-wrapped gifts. The Christmas schedule in England’s top division is always a memorable occasion and has, in the past, served up some memorable matches and historic performances. This year looks to be no different.

We take a look at the games that are set to take place on Boxing Day, perfect to enjoy with the Christmas leftovers.

Newcastle United - Nottingham Forest (7:30am ET / 4:30am PT)

The Magpies are coming into this crucial tie off the back of a loss against Luton Town. Eddie Howe’s side, who were recently knocked out of the Champions League, sit just outside of the European places and aspire to do what they did last year and make it into Europe’s elite tournament. As for Forest, they got rid of Steve Cooper last week and sit just two points ahead of the relegation zone, giving this game a huge sense of importance.

Sheffield United - Luton Town (10:00am ET / 7:00am PT)

Speaking of the bottom of the league, Sheffield United’s game against Luton Town is what you might call ‘a six-pointer’, given the proximity of the two sides and their precarious position in the table. The Blades are rock-bottom of the division and have just 9 points from 18 games; Luton have only 3 more and also sit in the red zone of the league.

Bournemouth - Fulham (10:00am ET / 7:00am PT)

This mid-table clash is a tale of two teams whose fortunes have turned around. Fulham, while they may not be flying high in the table, are well away from relegation and recently made the semi-finals of the League Cup. Bournemouth have undergone a mid-season revival: after suffering from a lack of form, Andoni Iraola has turned things around at the coastal club and they have moved away from the tail end of the division.

Burnley - Liverpool (12:30am ET / 9:30am PT)

Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal has increased the importance of their potential banana skin tie to Burnley. Any game against a relegation-threatened team is a tricky one, and against Burnley, away from home, will prove a tough test. The Clarets recently beat Fulham, so they also come into the game with their tails up.

Manchester United - Aston Villa (2:30pm ET / 11:30am PT)

Manchester United against Aston Villa is without a doubt the game of the day. The Birmingham side have mounted a title charge and are currently in nose-bleed territory in the table, just one point off the top. Ten Hag’s side have not been able to escape the tornado of mediocrity that they are trapped inside. Aston Villa will come into the game as the favourites, and their opponents will hope that André Onana has overcome his nightmare performance against West Ham.
