What Pumas and Cruz Azul need to get into the playoffs
Two of the biggest clubs in Mexican soccer need to get results quickly to avoid failure this season.
Pumas UNAM and Cruz Azul are having a disastrous season, as they find themselves at the bottom of the table. With three games left to play, the two clubs will be looking for wins to avoid failure.
After beating Mazatlan last week, the team coached by Raul ‘Potro’ Gutierrez managed to climb to 13th place in the overall standings with 15 points, level on points with Mazatlan, who are in the playoffs thanks to goal difference. The team from La Noria will finish the regular season playing León, Pumas and Chivas Rayadas of Guadalajara. They would have to get at least six points out of a possible nine and hope that Mazatlan, Xolos of Tijuana and the Auriaules do not get more than five points.
Two defeats for Cruz Azul would see them eliminated. Pumas have an even more difficult path to the playoffs. The team coached by Andrés Lilllini need to beat Cruz Azul this Sunday at Ciudad Universitaria, in addition to beating Puebla and Bravos de Juárez to hope for a ticket to the playoffs, as long as the Cementeros, Xolos, Mazatlán and Bravos de Juárez do not win.
For now, Querétaro Gallos Blancos and Atlas are the only teams that are totally eliminated. Despite being at the bottom of the standings, fans of Los Rojinegros continue to support the club, who have given them two league championships in the last two Liga MX competitions.
