What punishment has América striker Henry Martín received for his goal celebration against Chivas?
The Mexico striker celebration ‘tribute’ in the Clásico Nacional drew criticism and he has now been punished by Liga MX’s Disciplinary Committee.
Club América recorded an impressive 4-2 victory in El Clásico Nacional away to Chivas last weekend, a result which looked as if it might end up being much more emphatic when Henry Martín put them 4-0 ahead just after half-time. The Mexican international striker drew plenty of criticism, however, for his goal celebration, which saw him crouch down in front of goal Chivas were defending and imitate a dog urinating on the goal line. A ‘tribute’ to Martín’s hero, América legend Cuauhtémoc Blanco, but one which cost him a yellow card initially, and now further disciplinary action.
Late on Tuesday, Liga MX’s Disciplinary Committee met and reached the decision to fine the attacker, although they did not specify the exact amount. Club América also received a warning about the future conduct of their players and coaching staff.
Liga MX Disciplinary Committee statement
“The Disciplinary Committee reports that, as a result of the events that occurred on Saturday 18 March 18 2023, during the match between the Guadalajara and Club América, corresponding to Matchday 12 of the Clausura 2023 Tournament, it has resolved the following:
The Committee has decided to fine the player Henry Josué Martín Mex for violating article 71, section b) of the Mexican Soccer Federation’s Sanctions Regulations, which prohibits any conduct which is anti-fair play, unsportsmanlike and goes against the values of association football.
Club América has been warned about the future conduct of its players and coaching staff, and the Disciplinary Committee may impose more severe sanctions on them in the future should this type of incident be repeated.”
Diego Cocca: Martín to be a ‘leader’ for Mexico
Martín is currently on international duty with the Mexican national team, who will play against Suriname (on Thursday 23 March) and Jamaica (Sunday 26 March) in the CONCACAF Nations League. New Mexico boss Diego Cocca has claimed that the striker will be one of the senior figures and leaders of the new era.
