Problems are piling up for the leadership of Bayern Munich after a few unpleasant weeks, both on and off the field, with the club now grappling with how to discipline Sadio Mané following an altercation with teammate Leroy Sané. The incident occurred after the team’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City on Tuesday evening, with Mané reportedly attacking Sané in response to comments made during the game.

What next for Mané after Sané punch?

CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic met on Wednesday to discuss potential consequences for Mané, with both players also in attendance to offer apologies. As it turned out, on Thursday it was announced that the Senegalese player would be suspended for one game and he will also be fined. The club seeks to send a message that such behaviour will not be tolerated.

‘Sadio Mané, 31, will not be included in the FC Bayern squad for this Saturday’s home match against 1899 Hoffenheim,’ read the official statement ‘This is due to his misconduct after Bayern’s Champions League match at Manchester City. Mané will also be given a fine.’

Some reports suggest that Mané's future at the club may be in doubt, with Sky Sports indicating that his contract could be terminated unilaterally. The channel also notes that many players are said to be unhappy with Mané's behaviour, and that he may not have a future in Munich beyond the summer. He only joined them last year after a hugely successful spell in Liverpool.

This is not the first time that Bayern Munich has had to deal with such issues, with a similar incident involving Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben occurring in 2012. However, the club will no doubt be keen to ensure that such incidents do not become a pattern, and will be closely monitoring the situation in the coming days.
