What’s next for Chelsea after Rosenior exit?
Chelsea’s loss to Brighton cemented a run of five consecutive defeats for the Blues and heralded the end of the line for Rosenoir on the Stamford Bridge bench.
A Tuesday night loss to Brighton & Hove Albion was the final straw for the management of Chelsea FC as they confirmed in a short statement on Wednesday, that with immediate effect the 41-year-old would be leaving the club.
The Londoner spent just over three months at the football club making the move from sister club Racing Club de Strasbourg and replacing Enzo Maresca in January.
Chelsea now sit in 7th position in the Premier League standings and are 7 points adrift of a Champions League place following five consecutive defeats which have seen the Blues fail to find the target in this quintet of losses.
McFarlane returns to the bench
Chelsea have appointed Calum McFarlane as interim head coach until the end of the season, marking his second caretaker spell this year. His first match is the FA Cup semi‑final vs Leeds at Wembley on Sunday and his brief is simple in restoring stability and push for European qualification and salvage silverware.
It’s not expected that the club bring in a new head coach as the season is just about to wind down but the statement does state that Chelsea will now conduct a “process of self‑reflection” before making a long‑term appointment — language that suggests a summer decision rather than a quick fix.
Chelsea candidates
Shortly after the news broke, the rumour mill sparked in to life about potential candidates to replace the Wandsworth native with some obvious favourites emerging.
Cesc Fàbregas (Como)
Filipe Luís (recently left Flamengo)
Marco Silva (Fulham, contract expiring)
Oliver Glasner (leaving Crystal Palace)
Xavi Hernandez (out of work)
All have been mentioned in early reporting, but no preferred candidate has emerged yet.
Hasselbaink ‘shocked’
Speaking on Sky Sports shortly after the news broke, former Chelsea star Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink claimed that originally the club was “brave” to appoint a young English manager like Rosenior and argued that if you make such a bold choice, you must give them “all the chances to succeed.” The former Dutch striker did admit to being ‘shocked’ by the decision given the late stage of the 2025-26 season.
Chelsea’s final tilt at silverware comes in the form of the FA Cup with just four Premier League matches outstanding for the Blues as the season comes to a conclusion in May.
