When does MLS pause for the 2026 World Cup? Key dates and schedule break
Most teams have played 13/14 games as part of the 2026 MLS regular season as the league is set for a World Cup ‘pause’.
This weekend will see the final round of MLS regular season matches until late July as the league takes a significant break to allow for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With the tournament being staged in Mexico, USA and Canada, a decision was taken to take a total break and permit players to report to their national teams ahead of the FIFA mandatory player release deadline on May 25.
With many of the national teams still to confirm their definitive squad lists, it’s anticipated that anywhere between 60-80 MLS stars will be involved in the tournament. This marks a significant increase from the 36 who were involved in the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
MLS action restarts on July 16–17 with a slate of rivalry matches, just a few days before the World Cup final on July 19. This lengthy pause allows the league to accommodate the expanded 48-team tournament, frees up MLS stadiums acting as host venues, and lets fans focus entirely on the World Cup.
In the opening stage of the MLS campaign, both Nashville SC and Vancouver Whitecaps are the early pace setters in the Eastern and Western Conferences respectively.
