The United States men’s team started their preparations for the 2022 World Cup with a friendly against Japan in Düsseldorf on Friday - the first of two warm-up matches before their opening game in Qatar, against Wales on 21 November.

The 2-0 defeat to Japan wasn’t the most encouraging result for Gregg Berhalter’s team, but at least the game gave the coach a chance to take a look at all of his players before the definitive list of 26 players is submitted to FIFA on 18 November. These games will give players like left-back Sam Vines and midfielder Luca de la Torre an opportunity to impress. Vines along with Gio Reyna made their first starts in over a year at the Düsseldorf Arena while Josh Sargent, Jonny Cardoso and Mark McKenzie all came on as second half substitutes, making their first appearances for the national team this year.
