Thursday night saw a series of negative milestones for Vlatko Andonovski’s side as they fell to defeat at the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

The defeat ended a 71-match home unbeaten streak and was the first reverse on US soil since 2017.

Despite the defeat, the USWNT were afforded plenty of chances at the game attended by more than 17,000 fans at DRV PNK Stadium, home of MLS side Inter Miami.

Lindsey Horan hit the post twice in the 35th and 51st minutes as Germany’s Klara Bühl fired a curling shot that ricocheted off the woodwork but back into the goal after hitting goalkeeper Casey Murphy in the back in the 52nd minute.

Trailing 1-0, striker Megan Rapinoe came on and tied the game in the 85th minute, tapping in a pinpoint cross from the left by another of the team’s veteran stars, Alex Morgan.

Just as the home team was looking for the winner, Paulina Krumbiegel bagged a second for the visitors after a brilliant counterattack by Germany, who were runner-up in this year’s European Championship.

The result ended a 71-match unbeaten streak on home soil, the second-longest in U.S. history, which included 64 wins and seven draws. The USWNT last home defeat came at the hands of Australia on July 27, 2017.

Hat-trick of defeats

The loss was also the first time the World Champions have been beaten in three successive games after losing in the last two away friendlies to England and Spain last month.

The last time a USWNT side were beaten in three successive games was back in 1993 where defeat at the hands of Norway was followed up with two losses to Germany with the first two of these games forming part of a tournament staged in Cyprus.

Andonovski’s side have a chance seek revenge as they face Germany again next Sunday at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, MA.
