Where will Edson Álvarez play next season? Dortmund end bid to sign Mexico star
Borussia Dortmund are reported to have opted against signing Ajax’s Álvarez, who had been heavily to join the Bundesliga club in a deal worth €50m.
Borussia Dortmund have reportedly ended their interest in Mexico international Edson Álvarez, who now looks set to remain at Ajax.
According to the specialist transfer-market journalist Fabrizio Romano, Dortmund have opted against signing Álvarez despite agreeing contract terms with the defensive midfielder last week.
Álvarez deal worth €50m was close
The Bundesliga club had been closing in on a €50m deal for Álvarez, who has spent four years at Ajax, helping the four-time European champions to two Dutch league titles.
Dortmund had been expected to pay an initial €35m for the 25-year-old, plus a further €15m in add-ons.
Per Romano, the Germans have now decided to use Emre Cam in the defensive-midfield position earmarked for Álvarez.
Álvarez helps Mexico to winning Gold Cup start
Currently on Mexico duty at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the former Club América player earned his 63rd international cap in El Tri’s 4-0 win over Honduras in Sunday’s group-stage opener.
Mexico, coached by interim boss Jaime Lozano after the sacking of Diego Cocca, take on Haiti in their second group game on Thursday.
