The Premier League is the most expensive league in world football. It is the NBA of the game and spending has increased at a simply unbelievable rate over the past seasons at television deals and marketing strategies bring in millions upon millions of pounds.

As such, the top managers can be brought in to create fantastically well-oiled projects full of elite players, all on eye-watering salaries. Lower end Premier League clubs regularly outperform the top clubs across Europe when it comes to offering attractive financial packages to prospective signings, which has seen the overall level of football increase in the division. Leo Messi to Bournemouth? Not quite, but let’s not rule anything out just yet.

Before we dig in, player contracts are extremely complicated agreements, with clauses for things you won’t think are real and bonuses that cause the overall numbers to fluctuate. So, with that in mind, according to Capology, here are the top-ten earners in the Premier League. For context, the UK government recorded that as of May 2024, the average wage in the UK was $823 per week:

As we can see, Kevin de Bruyne is the top earner at Manchester City and the league in general. The Belgian signed a $511,000-a-week back in 2021 and it will end once next season comes to a close. Curiously, the midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia reportedly interested in acquiring his services.

Behind De Bruyne comes another huge name - possibly the biggest talent in the division. Leeds born-Erling Haaland lit up the Premier League in his debut season as Manchester City romped to the treble, slicing everyone in their path. Last season was not as spectacular, with Real Madrid getting the better of them in Europe, but Haaland’s goals have given the side another dimension in front of the net.

Closing out the top three is perhaps not a name that many would expect to see. Real Madrid selling Casemiro to Manchester United came as a huge shock but since his big-money move to England’s northwest, the Brazilian has found adapting from paella to fish and chips tough and is arguably yet to justify the huge outlay by ten Hag’s team.

However, the biggest surprise of them all is surely Romelu Lukaku, reportedly on a salary of $415,000 a week. Chelsea’s new owners and spending big but I reckon Lukaku’s wages are even more staggering than the fact they have 8 goalkeepers. The Belgian has played out on loan for two consecutive seasons, with spells at Inter Milan and Roma, but looks set to play for the Premier League side under Enzo Maresca this season.
