Manchester United are returning to the top of English football thanks in large part to their new manager, Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman has signed players to help carry out his idea but he has also wanted to let others go, including Cristiano Ronaldo. Another of the experienced members of the dressing room, Harry Maguire, was declared transferable in January.

The United centre-back and captain was included in a list of six players who could be sold by Ten Hag. That list also includes Anthony Martial, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles and Eric Bailly. Telles and Bailly are on loan this season, at Sevilla and Marseille respectively, but the Dutchman would like to release them in the summer.

Maguire will have more game time but could leave

Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martínez and Victor Lindelof are all ahead of Maguire in the race for a place at centre-back in the starting eleven. Inter were interested in him and all indications were that he would leave on loan until the summer, but Ten Hag himself put a stop to the move. Faced with a busy schedule over the coming weeks, the Red Devils boss promised Maguire more opportunities to regain his place in the team after he refused to let him go.
