Update:

Daniel Siebert will referee the second leg of the Arsenal vs Atlético Madrid semifinal in the Champions League at the Emirates, marking the German official’s most high-profile appointment to date.

Who is Daniel Siebert?

The 42-year-old is a UEFA elite-category official, so he can certainly be trusted with high-pressure European nights, although fans will have their own partisan views. His path to this stage has been steady, beginning refereeing in 1998, moving into the 2. Bundesliga in 2009, and reaching the Bundesliga, Germany’s top flight, in 2012. Three years later, he was added to FIFA’s international list.

Siebert has since built a solid record in major tournaments. He handled three matches at UEFA Euro 2020, including the round of 16 game between Wales and Denmark, and also took charge of the final at the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup.

Many fans will be familiar with the German because of his appearances in the Champions League. He has officiated 26 games in the competition since first taking charge of Liverpool vs Crvena Zvezda in the 2018-19 group stage.

Until this week, Siebert’s most high-profile fixtures had come in the quarterfinals. He officiated Atlético’s 0-0 home draw against Manchester City in April 2022 and oversaw Arsenal’s 1-0 victory away to Sporting CP last month in this season’s competition.

Siebert’s record with Arsenal and Atlético Madrid

In all, Siebert has previously refereed three Atlético Madrid games, none of which they have won, with two defeats and a draw, and three Arsenal matches, all of which they have been victorious in. A good omen for the Premier League team, perhaps?

Off the pitch, Siebert lives in Berlin and works part time as a teacher within a sports program. On nights like this, though, his focus is simple: keep the game under control and avoid becoming part of the story.

Who is VAR for Arsenal vs Atlético Madrid?

Siebert will lead an all-German team of officials at the Emirates. Jan Seidel and Rafael Foltyn are the assistant referees, with Tobias Stieler acting as fourth official.

Bastian Dankert will be on VAR duty, assisted by Robert Schröder.
