US ELECTION 2024

Who is Jill Stein, the American doctor and activist running for the Green Party in the US Election 2024?

2024 is the third time the 74-year-old Chicago native will run in the US presidential elections

Chicago native Jill Stein is an American physician and political activist with 2024 her third time standing as the Green Party US nominee for president of the United States having done so in 2012 and 2016 elections.

Stein is among the list of several women who have run for President of the United States and also one of the few who received over a million votes in the general election behind both Hillary Clinton and Jo Jorgensen.

In 2024, Stein is taking on former President Trump and Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris, running on a campaign which focuses on an anti-war stance, universal healthcare, free public education, an eco-socialist “real Green New Deal”, and strong worker rights. Her vice presidential running mate is Butch Ware.

Stein is married to Richard Rohrer, who is also a physician with the couple living in Massachusetts.

Candidacy snag

Last week, Stein’s campaign faced a hurdle as the European Green Party called on Stein to drop out of the race for the White House and declare her support for Democratic candidate and US Vice-President Kamala Harris.

Stein has returned to the race this year amid criticism from the Democratic Party, which sees her presence as a ‘vote siphon’ that ends up favouring the Republican candidate, in this case Donald Trump.

‘The European Green family,’ the PVE said in a statement, ‘stands for a policy that puts the planet, people and peace before corporate greed, systemic injustice and violence.

‘It is clear to us,’ they add, ‘that Kamala Harris is the only candidate who can stop Donald Trump and his anti-democratic and authoritarian policies from reaching the White House. In view of these momentous elections, we call on Green Party candidate Jill Stein to withdraw her candidacy and declare her support for Harris’. The European Greens take the opportunity to recall that there is no link with the US Greens or with Stein, whose policies espouse ‘different values’.
